WWE Friday Night Smackdown Thoughts: 2/3/2012

Tonight's episode was pretty awesome top to bottom...find out which segments are worth your viewing after the jump!

  • The show opens with an appearance by Teddy Long who announces the competitors for the Smackdown Elimination Chamber match.

Mark Henry was originally scheduled to be in the match but he said he wanted no part of it.  He then proceeded to threaten Teddy, leading to him being suspended indefinitely.  Looks like the HALL OF PAIN is closed for now....Not a bad idea, Henry could use the time off to recharge his batteries and return as the dominant force that owned the Smackdown scene in 2011.
  • Nice touch having Sheamus wait until after the chamber PPV to choose which title he will go for.  I never saw the point of the rumble winner immediately choosing and then having to wait until after the PPV anyway to see who he will face.
  • Good match between Sheamus and Cody Rhodes.  I loved the beautiful disaster spot on the barrier outside the ring.  Sheamus picks up the victory with the debut of a new finisher.
Match Rating: 3.25/5

  • HOLY SHIT! Hunico is going to need to see the quiropráctico after that slam by The Great Khali.  I Still don't see the point in bringing the Punjabi Playboy back though.  How will he survive the chamber when he can barely walk to the ring.
  • Santino and Jim Duggan (Santin-HOOOOOO) are now a team.....you could imagine my enthusiasm.....it's probably the same as yours.....
  • Shame on me for not congratulating Mike Tyson for his induction in the WWE Hall of Fame in my Raw review.  For a period in the late 90s, the WWE was all but doomed until Tyson and Austin set the world on fire.  He has always been an avid supporter of the WWE and his involvement in Wrestlemania XIV saved pro wrestling in some ways.
  • Very happy to see the tag champs in action but they need to find some credible opponents to solidify their status as the WWE's top tandem.  Primo earns the victory over Santin-HOOOOOO by hitting a sick back stabber on Santino after some distraction by Rosa Mendes.
Match Rating: 2/5

  • I guess with a co-sign from Michael Cole comes the final stamp in Daniel Bryan's heel turn.  Great mic work by the champion tonight.  You have to respect the fact that Daniel has managed to survive as World Champion on a show full of giants.  Sneaky move by the champ using AJ (who looked devastatingly cute in her neck brace) to again slip away from the clutches of The Big Show.

  • LMFAO at Natalya's farting gimmick but I don't really see the point of it at all.
  • Beth Phoenix and Natalya defeat Aksana and Tamina in another squash.  I LOVE that Beth Phoenix doesn't even consider her fellow 'Diva of Doom' as being worthy of sharing the ring with her.

  • Our MAIN EVENT tonight saw Randy Orton face Wade Barrett in a NO DQ match.

Man did these two tear down the house (literally)!  This feud has so much steam at this point with the Randy Orton revenge motive backing it.  The chemistry between these two is off the charts as well.  I really love the 'old school' vibe that they bring to their matches together.  There is no other rivalry in the WWE right now that feels this personal and intense. The crowd was in a frenzy throughout the match until Orton picks up the win via. an RKO on top of a chair.

Match Rating: 4.25/5 (AWESOME just fucking AWESOME!!!!)

Post match we find out that we will get to see Daniel Bryan vs. Randy Orton next week!

My reaction.....

Though the Viper does not look as pleased......AWESOME SHOW!

Final thoughts: A great show to follow the amazing Raw this past Monday.  Daniel Bryan and Randy Orton next Friday should be a solid 'match of the year' nominee if it lives up to my expectations.

Overall episode rating: 8.5

What to watch if you DVR'd the episode: The Barrett-Orton NO DQ match, the Daniel Bryan segments and the match between Cody and Sheamus was pretty good as well.
