Here are the highlights from February 2012:
Superstar of the Month: Daniel Bryan
For the second month in a row, Daniel Bryan was the most consistently impressive WWE superstar. Many fans have turned into doubters when it comes to Bryan's attitude as of late, but no one can deny his effectiveness. He beat the odds when he retained his World Heavyweight Championship at the Elimination Chamber PPV and even earned a big time victory over Randy Orton. He has also managed to outsmart all of his opponents, a trait that is vastly underestimated by most of the WWE roster. Say what you want about his credibility, Daniel Bryan is on the streak of his career and there appears to be no stopping him.
Match of the Month: WWE Smackdown 2/21/2012: Champion vs. Champion: WWE Champion CM Punk vs. World Heavyweight Champion Daniel Bryan II
After the amazing contest these two had in January, we all knew right away that we were in for another great bout between the two best wrestlers in the company. What we did not know, was that it would be the best match of the year thus far and an instant classic. CM Punk and Daniel Bryan's egos have both increased tremendously in their respective runs as champion. Both men firmly believe that they are the best wrestler in the world, and both easily fall within the top 5 names in anyone's list right now (both constantly battling neck and neck for the top spot in the rankings each month). So naturally, with all the bragging rights on the line, they tore the house down yet again and delivered unbelievable sequences of near falls and amazing chain wrestling. When it was all said and done, we were left with some of the best mat wrestling in the last 5 years, something the WWE has sorely needed.
Match Rating: ****1/4
Moment of the Month: John Cena is Uncensored
When John Cena entered the ring for the second time in one night on the February 20 edition of Monday Night Raw, I thought he would resort to the poop jokes and cheeky comments he usually uses in his promos. What a pleasant surprise it was that the man many accuse of being phony, exposed to the WWE Universe who the REAL phony is. Cena delivered possibly the best and most memorable promo of his career with his heartfelt words and unbridled passion. He rips The Rock apart and dare I say it, earns the respect of many of his naysayers. In the end, it was the most memorable moment of the entire month. One that had everybody talking and ultimately, one that helped Cena regain much of the momentum he had lost since he began feuding with The Rock a year ago.
Surprise of the Month: Cinder-Marella
The biggest shocker of the year so far, has to be the Cinderella story of Santino Marella. One of the WWE's most beloved entertainers was the LAST person anyone thought would win the battle royal on Smackdown on February 17 and earn Randy Orton's spot in the Elimination Chamber. What made things even more surprising (or upsetting, depending on how you want to look at it) was that he came this close to winning the World Heavyweight Championship. Whether you loved it or hated it, it was a hell of an unpredictable thrill ride that had us on the edge of our seats for much of the month. Unfortunately for Santino, Daniel Bryan was the one who found his glass slipper, and Bryan promptly shoved it right up Santino's ass.
Top Ten WWE Superstars Pound for Pound
*(The number in parenthesis is the superstar's rank in the last month's list)
- Daniel Bryan (2) World Heavyweight Champion: Bryan continues to impress as the WWE's resident mastermind. Manipulating his way into victories over Randy Orton, The Big Show, Santino Marella, and Sheamus. Capping off an awesome month with a big win at the Elimination Chamber PPV.
- CM Punk (1) WWE Champion: While Punk did not have as good of a month as he did in January, he still was very successful. Along with Bryan, he made history when he also retained his WWE Championship in Satan's favorite structure. He did however lose some momentum in the beginning of his feud with Chris Jericho.
- Sheamus (5) 2012 Royal Rumble Winner: The Great White dominated pretty much anyone unfortunate enough to step into the ring with him in February. He earned solid victories over Cody Rhodes, Wade Barrett and Mark Henry. He also announced that he will be challenging for the World Heavyweight Championship at Wrestlemania, further increasing his stock.
- Chris Jericho (10): The number one contender for CM Punk's WWE Championship has been on a massive roll as of late. He earned the right to challenge Punk by winning a number one contenders battle royal, defeated Kofi Kingston in a very good match, and he appears to be as dangerous as ever in his quest to prove that he is truly, the best in the world.
- John Cena (9): John Cena finally got the big red monkey off his back, defeating Kane in an ambulance match at the Elimination Chamber PPV. He also regained some much needed confidence in his feud with The Rock with his scathing promos. As I predicted last month, Cena is back to his old self, more focused then ever.
- Santino Marella (-): I didn't think I would ever mention Santino's name in any top ten list, but that's what makes his performance last month all the more intriguing. He won a huge battle royal and almost became World Champion. Pretty impressive for a guy everyone considered a novelty act at the start of the month.
- Primo and Epico (8) Unified Tag Team Champions: The champs kicked off the month with victories over Jim Duggan and Santino Marella and The Usos. They got a bit sidetracked when they lost to Kofi Kingston and R Truth, but they bounced back by retaining their belts in a triple threat tag team match, easily their biggest win to date.
- The Big Show (-): Big Show turned in a decent performance last month beating the likes of Wade Barrett, Mark Henry and his current rival, Cody Rhodes. And while he is not as dominant as he once was, a big IC title win over Rhodes will help get him there.
- Cody Rhodes (4) Intercontinental Champion: Rhodes didn't earn many impressive victories in February, but he is still the WWE's longest reigning champion. That feat alone, is impressive enough to keep him high in the rankings.
- Dolph Ziggler (3) and Kofi Kingston (-): Both men turned in the most exciting and consistent in-ring performances over the past month. Most notably, at the Elimination Chamber event. They proved throughout the month that they are both two of the brightest young stars in the company.
