WWE Monday Night Raw: 3/4/2013

ERHMAGERD, IT'S THE DERDMERN!!!!!

Last night was "Old School RAW" and being that it's usually one of the most star studded nights of the year, the WWE did everything they could to make this a memorable affair.  The highlight of the evening was the return of The Undertaker, whose appearance allowed us to exhale after weeks of playing "He loves me, He loves me not".

-There was plenty to love about last night's list of legends, but no matter who you're a mark for, a appearance by The Deadman is always a welcome addition to the show.  Immediately it set the tone for the entire evening and no matter what bit of wonderful nostalgia they had planned, we we're all excited about the idea of Sheamus, Randy Orton, CM Punk & Big Show all putting on their working boots for a shot at the biggest title at Wrestlemania, The Undertaker's famed streak.

-I thought such a twist was a brilliant set up and even though everyone was pretty much sold on the idea of it being CM Punk, it's the means to which we get our end that matter in the build to Rematchamania Deluxe (yes, that's what the kids are calling it now).  The match felt a little short, and I could've done with a bit more Orton/Punk, but these are minor selfish complaints and all year long I've wanted Punk and Undertaker to headline Wrestlemania and as long as they give Punk a microphone and 15 minutes of time over the next couple of weeks, then all the folks pissy about Rock/Cena II will have a main event very much worth their money.  I mean come on, what else you going to do with your 70 bucks?  Waste it on the next Black Ops 2 map pack?  I hear that's how much their going for these days....

-Really though, Punk was the best option of the four men in question last night.  Sure, one lonely fan tweeted me with a suggestion of Randy Orton getting another shot and somehow managing to end the streak with a finishing sequence that involves some 15 or so RKOs.

-You know what, forget about him.  As he was typing the Shield's theme hit and he was on the receiving end of a Triple Powerbomb.  We won't be hearing from him again.

-It's amazing though that Taker's streak has gotten over so huge that it's become bigger than Money In The Bank, King OF The Ring, the friggin Royal Rumble, Mortal Kombat, Brock's Gym In Pokemon, you name it, the streak eclipses it in scope and difficulty.  The list of superstars hoping to test their mettle against the WWE greatest active legend is a mile long and they expressed that in some form tonight.  It's a concept I enjoy and one that could develop even further with perhaps a tournament next year for what could be The Undertaker's "last ride".  Cena?  Sting?  Lesnar?  Rock?  The opportunities are endless.

SOON....

-It goes without saying that I'm pumped for the suggested Mark Henry vs. Ryback match.  I would love to see these two behemoths let loose without any boundaries.  Give any stipulation that promotes the idea of these two fighting all over the arena and I'm there.  It could provide a hell of a Wrestlemania moment of Ryback could somehow manage to Shell Shock the World's Strongest Man, but Henry is one big bad dude and it's going to take a lot more than a few Ultimate Warrior snarls to get there.  This could be the match of Ryback's career.

-The New Age Outlaws also returned to action last night to the delight of anyone over the age of twenty and it seemingly caused a mixed response from fans here on the Internet.  I thought they looked great and turned in the best bit of nostalgia of the night.  But I'm a DX mark, so maybe I'm alone in this.  Though seriously, if you wouldn't geek the fuck out for them getting a shot at Team Hell No at Wrestlemania, then you more than likely have no idea what the big "E" in WWE stands for.

I mean come on, just give these guys a match.  Dawwww look at how excited they are....

-"In order to be the greatest that ever lived, you have to beat everyone living."  John Cena, quoting Mike Tyson, passionately informed The Rock that he has beaten everyone there is to beat and then he expressed that he has "jumped every road block" in his career except for The Great One.  The Rock may have returned fire with a sharp quip about both Cena and Lance Armstrong, but make no mistake about it, the guy went WAAAYYYYYY out of his way to put Cena over here.  Some of you may say Rock was trying to convince some jaded fans to like John Cena through false admiration, but this was a genuine message of respect.

-The Rock has come back to give back to the business and the best way for him to do that is to elevate the current top talent to his level.  Other than Punk, there is no one even remotely close as John Cena.  This segment was money folks.  Love it or hate it.  I'd argue that there is a bit more magic this time around with Cena's determination feeling much more legitimate than the blend of confidence, entitlement and arrogance he came into the match with last year.  A now humbled and hungry Cena, driven by redemption has shown his face here.  And it's a face that along with an inspired Dwayne Johnson, is going to sell a fuckload of tickets this year if they keep turning in the goods like they did last night.  Kudos.

Gee Rock.  That's an awful big stack of money.
