There are many great belts in the history of pro wrestling, and in each decade, there is ONE belt that triumphs over them all. In the 70-80s, we had the NWA Championship, the 90s, we had the Intercontinental Championship, and in the 2000s, it was the WWE Championship. However, since 2010, one belt has stood high above the rest as the most prestigious belt in professional wrestling, the WWE World Heavyweight Championship. In part one, of a two part series (the other being the essential WWE WHW title matches), I will highlight the reasons why this belt is held in such high regard.
For one, the belt has had more prolific champions with better reigns on top. Since 2010, we've seen the likes of Randy Orton, Edge, Chris Jericho, Christian, Mark Henry, Kane, Rey Mysterio, The Big Show, Jack Swagger and Daniel Bryan, all capture the gold, with the most noteworthy of these reigns, being Kane and Mark Henry's. If you want to talk match quality, look no further then the WWE's best PPV matches of 2011 DVD. Out of the 13 matches on the set, 6 of them were for the WHW Championship. 2010 however, saw the reign of Chris Jericho, which resulted in a classic showdown at Wrestlemania XXVI, where he successfully defended his title against Edge. Speaking of the Rated 'R' Superstar, no other wrestler had as many great matches for the gold. His classics with Alberto Del Rio, Dolph Ziggler, Jericho, Rey Mysterio and Kane, were all awesome. Randy Orton was also a great champion in terms of match quality, giving us an epic series of matches vs Christian and Mark Henry. The latest champion, Daniel Bryan, has had a few great bouts with Henry as well, and now seems poised to continue the great legacy of what I believe, to be the most prestigious title in the world today.
Stay tuned for my next article highlighting the best matches contested for this belt.
