WWE PPV Review: Survivor Series 2011

Here are my thoughts on the 25th annual Survivor Series:

This was a great PPV in terms of excitement.  In terms of match quality, not so much.  Still, The Rock and John Cena's epic clash at Wrestlemania XXVIII is looming, and they do an excellent job of building the hype.  Even if it was at Cena's expense.

Alright marks...

ITS SHOWTIME!

Match 1:: US Championship: Dolph Ziggler(c) vs. John Morrison
  • A solid opener with some exciting spots, but nothing too special here.
  • There's an impossible to ignore "we want Ryder" chant that was so loud, I kinda felt bad for Dolph and John.
  • As always, some awesome bumping by Dolph and sick counter wrestling sequences to go with it.
  • My fiancee wasn't really feeling the match though, and it made me worry for the appeal of John Morrison (given that he's one of her favorites and they try to market him as a bit of a ladies man).
  • Vickie Guerrero continues to make me believe that she is the heir to the Sensational Sherri throne.

Winner and STILL United States Champion: Dolph Ziggler
Match Rating: ***

Post-Match Highlight:
  • Zack Ryder comes out to an amazing pop and hits Ziggler with a Rough Ryder.  The crowd then proceeded to lose their friggin' minds.

Match 2:: Lumberjill match for the Divas Championship: Beth Pheonix(c) vs. Eve Torres
  • A bit disappointed that this was not as good as their match at Vengeance.
  • Who the fuck is Maxine?
  • The ref looks a lot like Michael McDonald (Stuart from Mad Tv).
  • Kelly is obviously the only lumberjill who knows what a lumberjill is.
  • SIIIIIICCCCKK submission by Eve.
Winner and STILL Divas Champion: Beth Pheonix via. a NASTY Glam Slam of the top rope.

    Match Rating: **3/4

    AWESOME

Up next we have a nice segment between Punk and David Otunga leading into an even more awesome promo by The Rock!  The Great One gives us a cool history lesson of memorable MSG moments.  I miss the days when the main event stars would cut great promos a few matches prior.  The Rock delivered here (as he always does) and you gotta see this for yourself.  The only part I didn't like was the cheesy singing.  Even Rocky turned around afterwards (probably to giggle a little).

Match 3:: Traditional Tag Team match: Team Orton vs. Team Barrett
    • Dolph Ziggler pulls double duty for at least his third PPV of 2011.
    • Hunico is the PG Homicide...he's a walking oxymoron.
    • Cody Rhodes exudes confidence.  Expect big things from him in 2012.
    • Ugly fall for a legit injured Sin Cara.
    • I fucking HATE Mason Ryan.
    • As a HUGE Ghostbusters fan, I love Kofi's gear.
    • Nice little chant for Cody, though the crowd never really recovered from the Sin Cara injury.
    • LOL Was Randy Orton planking after that dive by Hunico?

Winners and SOLE survivors: Wade Barrett and Cody Rhodes via a Wasteland by Barrett.

Match Rating: **3/4(the crowd killed any momentum)

    The Barrett Barrage continues...

Match 4:: World Heavyweight Championship: Mark Henry(c) vs. The Big Show
    • I liked that they reinforced the ring.  It was a nice touch as they should aknowledge the classic bout they had at Vengeance to build even more hype for this match.
    • Mark Henry got a surprisingly loud pop.  He is really over as a monster heel at this point.
    • Funny D'Lo Brown chant. What's even funnier is my girl then proceeded to ask me, "babe, who the fuck is D'Lo Brown?".
    • The match got pretty boring until the very end when Big Show attempted a HBK-like elbow drop from the top rope.

Winner and STILL WHW Champion: Mark henry via. DQ.

    Match Rating: *3/4

Mark Henry's reaction: AW HELLLLL NO!

Match 5:: WWE Championship match: Alberto del Rio vs. CM Punk
    • Nice package for this match (whoever has been doing them this year should get an emmy).
    • Nice touch by CM Punk (wearing an awesome hoodie) using Howard Finkel as his personal ring announcer.
    • Fink milked the hell out of the announcing.  He was visibly moved by the crowd response.
    • Cool chant for Randy Savage.
    • Some awesome storytelling in this match.
    • CM Punk has delivered a string of great performances this year.

Winner and NEW WWE Champion: CM Punk via the Anaconda Vise

    Awesome crowd dive
Have we crowned a new people's champion?

Match Rating: **** (great match, these two tore the house down).

    **MAIN EVENT**

Match 6:: One Night Only Tag Match: The Rock and John Cena vs. Awesome Truth
    • The Rock's presence in this match alone, elevates it above almost anything we've seen this year.  When you see him in the ring with the superstars of today, he just seems a level above everyone else.  This is nobody's fault.  The Rock is just one of those rare human beings with that X factor, and that is why he has been so successful both in and outside of the ring.
    • The Great One did not miss a beat in this match.  Watching him in this match, you would think he never left in the first place, even though his sharpshooter still looks like he's taking the people's shit lol.
    • Awesome acting by both The Rock and Cena in this match.  You really get the feel that The Rock hates Cena's guts. It seems as if the great one's time in Hollywood has somehow paid off for wrestling fans.
    • The crowd is the most anti-Cena since Money in the Bank.  I gotta admit, I felt bad for the guy.
    • Cool shot of the people's mom at ringside.

Winners: John Cena and The Rock

Match Rating: ***1/2  (Everything you wanted it to be!)

Post Match Highlight: The Rock cuts the nuts off John cena, then hits him with a Rock bottom.  When Cena recovers, he can clearly be seen mouthing the words, "no more Mr. Nice guy".....interesting.....

This feud just got so much more interesting..
GET YOUR MONKEY ASS OUTTA THE ROCK'S RING!

    Final thoughts:

Two very good matches, a few classic moments, and you've got all you need from a WWE PPV.  Still, most of the matches failed to deliver much more then a RAW worthy performance in the ring.  Either way John Cena vs. The Rock gained so much more momentum just from the main event alone. And after the dust was settled, we learned two important things:

CM Punk is the new face of the WWE

    Best in the World

And The Rock REALLY doesn't like John Cena

The Rock just doesn't like you

Overall PPV Score: 6.5 (Barely passable, but the last two matches saved this one)

Match of the night: CM Punk vs. Alberto Del Rio
Performer of the night: The Rock
Moment of the night: CM Punk's post-match celebration
Promo of the night: The Rock's history of MSG promo
Surprise of the night: The pure castration of John Cena at the end of the show

Let me know what you liked/disliked about the PPV
